Loudmouth, lefty know-alls will moan, energetically and vociferously, in the media and on Twitter. Others will criticise, and at high volume. Ministers were faced with a series of highly unpalatable options, and has plumped for what it sees as the least worst. This reduces the problem, but does not solve it. It means that the price of energy will merely double, as opposed to tripling or quadrupling. Our new Conservative ministry has responded by capping the rise in energy prices. Desperate times call for desperate remedies, as we rediscovered during the recent pandemic. Rightly, we expect our Government to act. It is a global problem, but that will not make paying the bills any easier. They are worried for the future, and they are right to be worried. They have heard the gloomy, even apocalyptic, predictions in the media during the summer. They are there across the nation, they are there in our local communities. We know there are many people who live hand-to-mouth, who have little in the way of savings for a rainy day. In this piece, I want to suggest how we, as individuals, can help. We cannot just leave it up to the Government to sort out the problem. Winter cannot be postponed or wished away. Soon, the price of energy will soar to levels none of us have ever experienced. Inflation in the price of food is already an everyday reality. Winter is bringing with it the cost of living crisis. After the high drama of the death of the Queen and the King’s accession, it does not take long for the affairs of the nation to resume.
